A cake cooling

Halfway-done is a thing I almost never photograph. But this cake came out of the oven smelling so good that I slid it onto the table and took a picture before I let it cool, because I wanted to remember the quietest part of the whole production - before the whipped cream, before the topping, when it was just a round pale cake in a pan. I put a towel over it and went to pour the drinks. The rest of the dinner happened around it.

A round white ceramic baking dish on a wood table holding a pale golden cake, the edges browned and starting to pull away from the sides of the pan.
